We offer this post to offering you support and encouragement for your experiences at work. We know that work tends to be a stressful place for most people. We would like to see that change, and we offer these thoughts and observations with the hope that you may find encouragement:
We are at an evolutionary crossroads where acknowledging vulnerability is the key to survival.
Our ancestors survived by hiding their weaknesses: evolution required this! (Other herd and flock animals behave this way, too.) It was the sick and the weak who would be picked off by predators or simply not make it through the harsh conditions that our ancestors encountered.
We are at an evolutionary crossroads unlike any we have faced before: our population has grown to the point that–in order to survive–we must empathize with vulnerability in each other, respect it, provide space for it, and even celebrate it. The survival of our race, and indeed, the planet, depends on this shift.
So why talk about this in the context of work? We have two reasons:
- Work is where we humans move, shape, and direct the reality of our existence. Work is where we do the bulk of what gets done, and in the direction of what gets done.
- Work is where, presently, we most feel the need to hide our vulnerabilities. Across organizations and society, this is a vast waste of energy and efficiency that could be focused on getting good work done.
We champion a change with this simple statement, which we find to be true: vulnerability is universal, and, therefore, to be OK with that within oneself is to live in true power.
